What would it take for Martial Law to be declared for the United States?

What kind of event(s) would cause the President of the United States to declare Martial Law?

Across the entire nation? That would have to be pretty dire. Generally, martial law is only imposed for a short time in the region of the disturbance. For example, Martial Law was declared in New York City on 9/11/01, and lifted as soon as it was apparent the emergency was over.

i believe that if crime gets much worse in some of our big cities martial law will be declared. Orlando has one of the worse crime rates in this country and the police can't seem to keep up with it. they are outnumbered by criminals and that is getting worse every day. i think, at least martial law should be declared there. especially due to the fact there are so many tourists coming in and most of them are families with children. they, as well as the citizens of Orlando deserve protection where ever it may come from.

The President would be in charge, until he relinquished control on his own. This was slowly put into affect over 20 years with Executive Orders signed by Reagan, Carter, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and soon Obama.

It would have to take a big disaster such as a nuclear bomb here in America. Not sure if you have been keeping up with what the Iranian president has been saying. He made threats to destroy Israel and the U.S. He is not stopping sanctions in Tehran, so he is now a threat to us.

There has been threats that even New York is aware of it. That bombs will go off in the big cities and even rural areas done by Islamists who are already here. I really think that we should take these threats serious before many people get killed.

Also, with a disaster like that, I think gun control will probably go into effect as well.

For that to occur in the entire country. There would have to be civil war. Now as far as certain areas. It's happened during riots and/or earthquakes or after a natural disaster. When looting needs to be put under control.
