Yes it can be very normal. I had times where the first day really incapacitated me I hurt so bad. Nothing helped. Heat, or the available medication at that time.
Try taking something like Aleve which besides being pain medication is also an anti spasmodic. It might help the most if you start to take it the day before you expect your period.

I used to get bad cramping when I was younger then with time it went away though I still have the back pains and sensible breast. I usually take Aspirin which makes all pain go but it makes the flow a little heavier than it is. Try that or Excedrin and you'll see relief.

Muscle cramps caused by hormonal changes. It's like having a charlie horse in your lower stomach and back. (You can take 4 advil).
My dr. when I was young (30 years ago) gave me a muscle relaxer. It made me fall asleep, but I felt so much better.
Many years later I went to the gyn because of this problem, and she put me on the birth control pill. I didn't like it--side effects. Eventually I ended up with the one I take now. My period lasts 3 days of little drips. No pain.
Best wishes, darlin'

oh boy! I remember that!!!
I had bad pains like that ...
Well I went to different doctors and no one could find out why the pain was so bad. so then I went to one of those holistic pot head "doctors" and he said that you feel more pain when you are stressed out - mentally stressed out (like in a bad relationship, if someone you love is not being nice to you, or you are fighting). So after I broke up with a bf ( he was the reason I was so stressed out) I never has bad cramps again.

I'm not sure of the actual reason but I do know that is normal. When I was younger, the pain used to be so bad that it made me throw up but it's not so bad anymore. Maybe it's just something you grow out of.

Same with me. first day, there is a lot of pressure because you are ovulating. dont worry about it. everything is usual. If its gets to the point where you cant handle it, take Midol, pamprin or any kind of advil that takes away pain. Hope that helps.
