Lug studs on axle with lug nuts outside the wheel. Sounds like whoever put the wheel on over-torqued the nuts. If it was a shop, they owe you, BIG!

The bolts are called lug bolts or wheel studs and the nuts that go on them are the lug nuts.
Quite rare for them to break, the only time I have had this happen was when they were either overtightened or the tire hit a very large obstacle at high speed as in running off the road. If you had any tire work done recently take the bolts in and show them, they will probably fix if for a reduced cost to avoid a law suit. They try very hard to avoid this type of trouble.
If there was no other damage, the bolts are not much more than a dollar each, and perhpas an hour labor to get the old ones out and new ones in.
A hundred dollars should cover it, but beware there MAY be other damage so a mechanic is not necessarily trying to rip you off if he discovers more damage.

not at all rare for a lug bolt to break... many tire shops have their air wrench set at too high pressure, thus overtightening the lug nuts. I forbid the tire shops from using an air wrench on my cars, just because its almost impossible to remove a flat tire out on the road. I make then hand torque to the manufactures spec.

Wheel studs. In your case, you have 5 of them. They will have to be knocked out and new studs pressed in. good luck.
