The Hymen is a thin piece of skin located just inside the vagina that partially blocks the vagina, but it still allows your menstrual (period blood) to flow out.

It can be broken during your first sexual experience when a male enters you with his penis or when he fingers you hard -- mostly with two or three fingers, or it can be broken earlier during vigorous exercise or horse riding, or when falling over hard.
