I haven't decided if I want to leave my job yet. If I do interview and my current employer finds out, can they fire me for it?

In a case like that, your employer would drum up a reason that would stand up under scrutiny to fire you.
If they fired you for interviewing with another company, you would have a great case for a wrongful dismissal suit.

They may not be able fire you for interviewing, but they probably CAN fire you with no reason at all. Federal law prohibits firing for specifically listed reasons including race, gender, etc. Interviewing with other companies is NOT on the list. State laws man have more limits, but I have never heard of this reason on any list.

Most employers find interviewing with another company to be disloyal and will let you go under the basis that you no longer want to work for them. That does constitute a valid reason and the judge may rule in the company's favor. Be careful.

Most employment is "at will".

That means they don't have to have a reason to fire you.

People who are planning to leave anyway often steal from their employer. If they go to competitors, they may carry trade secrets with them.

Consequently, they *do* have a good reason to fire you, even though they don't need one.

If you do it on company time, yes. Take a day off for the interview and use your cell phone during breaks for discussions.

If you live in a right to work state than yes they can fire you for anything. But that doesn't mean you can't sue them.

That can be considered retailation (ie: you can't quit, because your fired!). You can sue them for wrongful termination.

They can't fire you for no reason like that, and if they do then you can probably sue them.

Yeah, if policy says so. Nothing wrong in asking though.
