If you've been married a year and half and feel like you don't exist, all you do is meet the needs of your partner, cater to them - cook, clean, work, take care of 5 kids (not all mine - step kids)...I feel completely alone. Yes I've talked to him, asked for us to go to counseling, asked him to help around the house, but nothing gets to him - not sure he cares...

Sounds like he's not going to change. Just don't be too mean to the kids - remember that it's not their fault that their dad is an idiot!

maybe he is comfortable because everything that your doing- of course he wouldnt want it to change then he would have to lift a finger- basically grow some balls and put your foot down your not a robot or less then he is- you two are equals and that is how it needs to be or your will start resenting the relationship and yourself- so dont cook him dinner leave him out of things when doing laundry dont do his your not his mother but his wife- gain your respect back-- Oh I wish my husband would-
Did you know the man you married- I am so glad my marriage is not like that- I have come home to my house being clean and dinner on the table when I come home from work and no my husbands not a stay home dad- its commen courtesy just like if I came home first I would cook and do what needed to be done-- We also share the responsibility of the kids and work in the house-- so nobody is over burdened again that relys on the marriage being about the couple being equals.. good luck

will then he needs awake up call he is taken you for granted he knows you are upset but won't do nothing about it, so heres what you need to do tell him you have had enough pack you clothes and your child and leave go stay with family or frinds for awhile it wont be long before he will be begging you to come back home after he realizes how hard it is to run an household and just how much you do after he does tell him that you will come home on one condition that he change you know that he works and is tired but your not asking him to do it all just help with a few things.
