Ditto to Luvin Life and G, great answers
and thanks for the link luvin life

OH YES YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR BETTA'S PLACE OF LIVING IN

How dare you putting him in a much narrower space then he was before in that darn bowl
You should sit down and look at him for a while
Do you really think that he's happy in there??????
He can hardly turn around, not to talk about that he has no swim room what so ever!!!!!!!!

The absolute MINIMUM for a betta is a 2.5 gallon tank with filter and heater and 1 live plant, they love to rest on the real plants

Why a tank??
you will see him more active and swim around, and his colors will improve immensly

Why a heater??
to keep the watertemperature from dropping to far and causing stress for him

Why a filter??
To provide him with a bit of a current which they love.

To you know what their natural habitat is???? no???
here is a pic of it

Just because he can live in a bowl, doesn't mean he's happy and healthy in there

I just came accross a great page today, and you really should read it, as should all the others that think a betta doesn't need space, a heater or a filter

So if you really care about your betta, UPGRADE

Hope that helps
Good luck

First off take the dang plant out! It does nothing for the Betta. Betta's do not eat plants or roots! Betta's are also tropical fish and need to be in a heated tank. Many people say Betta's only live a few months to 2 years, but with proper care they can live for 5 plus years. Get him at least a 2.5 gallon tank with a filter and a micro heater set between 76-82 F and you will see how beautiful and happy he can be. And he will be more active because he will have more room to swim.

the more space you give a betta the more active he will be. i keep mine in small tanks -- 2 1/2 gallons. i think its a really good size for a betta. 5 would be better but i don't have enough space for 13 5 gallon tanks.

I also have one in a 20 gallon tank with other fish and he is by far the most active. more space = more active. i also keep floating aquatic plants in mine -- water sprite mostly. if you think yours likes his peace lily then you should see them hanging out catching some rays from the bulb in your tank on top of a chunk of water sprite.

i would suggest you plan for how much space you can provide -- my one lucky one in 5 gallons has a tank i got at walmart for 30 bucks.

I suspect he loves the vase because it is more space for him.
The plant does NOT "give him what he needs".
He needs FRESH SURFACE AIR, and he is a carnivore.
The plant only helps keep nitrates down, but nitrates don't get much chance to accumulate in a non-filtered environment, because it does not cycle.

My minimal advice would be to prune the plant and roots back and lower the water level enough to ensure a good flow of fresh air.

Here's a link with a ton of info on Bettas.
http://healthybetta.com/
You read it and then you can decide for yourself if the vase is okay or what might be better.

EDIT- Bubbles in the water do nothing for bettas. Bettas are labyrinth fish. They breathe SURFACE AIR. Their gills are more decorative than anything and used for aggressive display. If a betta cannot reach the surface for air IT WILL DROWN. Bubbles in the water are no more helpful to it than they would be to you if you could not reach the surface.

Your fish could be "happier" in a bigger tank than that. via that I advise that's going to likely be extra energetic and could probably stay longer. Bettas via nature are form of lazy, yet an excellent ecosystem with some decor frequently retains them moving and interacting a touch extra advantageous than a small tank could. That suggested, i could advise a 5 gallon tank - no larger and no smaller. that's not plenty extra high priced than the smaller tanks, that's extra convenient to maintain sparkling and guard with the aid of larger water volume (see below), and it will "tutor" nicer than a small tank with the aid of fact that's larger and you're able to fairly beautify it extra. They consume frequently happening fish foodstuff and that they make and sell "betta foodstuff" besides. that's probably good to offer them brine shrimp and bloodworms on occasion, however the "staple" could be a high quality foodstuff pellet. i'm unsure what you advise via "airafier," yet whilst that's touching on a filter out than specific, that's going to choose for that. in case you get a 5 gallon tank from a keep it will probably comprise one. you will additionally choose for a small heater, which lower back will the two come with your tank or you may get one at Wal Mart for below 10 greenbacks. determine you get one rated for 5 gallon tanks (which may well be approximately 25 watts). Bettas like the water around 80 two stages or somewhat warmer. For the cleansing, you're able to need to get a gravel vac, which you lower back purchase at Wal-Mart. they arrive in all sizes for all sizes of tanks, so get the smallest one they have. Use it and a sparkling water bucket to siphon-out 10% of your water each a million-2 weeks, and replace it with water out of your faucet (fill the bucket out of the faucet and use dechlorinator to "manage" it). This probably starts sounding such as you're able to desire to purchase a gaggle of stuff for a single fish, in spite of the undeniable fact that that's fairly not an excellent cost and that's belongings you fairly need to purchase merely as quickly as. some people do not do all this with bettas, yet believe me your fish would be extra advantageous off for it. good luck, and luxuriate on your betta. they are particularly neat fish. :)

that sounds fine. My grandmother has her beta in a glass thing she found at a thrift store. It doesnt have much air space at the top so she just bought a bubbler and put the tube in there, so it breaks the surface and he gets plenty of oxygen. If you're worried about it, do that. It'll break the surface of the water so he gets the air he needs, plus it'll give him something to play in (my grandmothers fish loves the bubbles)

Bettas absolutely MUST be able to get to the surface. They breat atmospheric oxygen through an organ called a labyrinth. A surface plant is fine but cut it back so that he can have access to air.
