We've been married almost 37 years, and we have all the relative "freedom" we could possibly want.
Benefits?
How about:
- no more stupid mind games in the "dating pool?"
- no more fear of STDs.
- no more concern as to whether your partner will be there in the morning; especially if they're the kind of person who has one foot firmly planted in the back door, ready to bail at the slightest hint of difficulty.

1. Ignore advice from recent divorcees... they are scorned and have warped opinions. But God love 'em anyway.
2. Marry the right person, who you love, have a good time with, who is a friend first and can be a life companion.
3. Get pre-marital counseling to set up your expectations. Outline with your future spouse that you expect to sometimes have alone time, separate friends.
4. Trust and be trust-worthy. Then you don't have to worry about someone being suspicious of cheating.
Take it from someone who is doing it now; my husband and I have alone time, girl friends, guy friends, free time, but also do activities together and still love and adore our time together. It's all about finding a good balance that works for you.
And in answer to your question, yes.

The benefit is simply sociological/cultural... it's society's way of validating a relationship and fitting in. You're expected to get married at some point in general, right? People also want their relationship religiously validated.
It's human nature to want to be a part of their society, so it feels good to most to get married and settle down. It gives a sense of security and such.
That's about it! I know someone who refuses to get married because he thinks it's stupid to conform to society *shrug. He's perfectly happy with his girlfriend of 15 years.

A marriage should not be a prison sentence. If you're in the right relationship you should never feel tied down or controlled. The idea of marriage is to share your life with someone not give your life to someone!

There are two reasons to get married.
- Legal. It entails certain legal privileges and responsibilities, and establishes a default will.
- Commitment. A symbolic thing, but of value.
