Could be a type of Orb spider.......does it have a pretty web? Maybe a Pumpkin spider........whatever, leave it alone. It's eating bugs you don't want in your garden. She will lay eggs and die off in cold weather and perhaps a baby will survive and you'll see it next year. Yes, they bite if you mess with it, but then so do I. Just give her her space.

Leave it alone. It is a garden spider. They get pretty large and are very colorful. They eat thousands of bugs from your yard. We live in the country, woods around. Have seen many of these in various colors. They have never bothered anything. Just stay away and let them live. They are like the story Charlotte's Web. They only live one season. Are harmless.

Could be a King George spider or Saint George or White Cross.....is it attacking your family...probably digging any insects that may really attack you...with fangs and desire to ravish the neighborhood...KILL the sucker before it kills you! Sorry Sir...just an insect..leave it as a web that is integral to this unholy universe.

Here are some spiders that are similar to your description. Pattern and color can vary quite a bit so keep that in mind when you are looking at the pics.

This is a brown widow which is exactly like the black widow except in temperament and color.
Is this your spider by any chance?

That's all I could find fitting your description.
Here are many pics of different orb weavers. They come in so many sizes, shapes, and patterns. Maybe if you sift through these pages of pics you may come across your spider.
