Is there a lump sticking out somewhere in the groin or testicle area? Was your baby born early and was your baby a boy? If a boy is born in the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy, the muscle wall in the groin area does not develope correctly to allow an opening for the testicles to drop into place. A tear forms instead to allow the testicles to drop. Hernias are very common in boys and need to be repaired at once. Make an appointment with a doctor now. If the hernia will not pop back inside the body then you have an immediate emergency and need to get to the hospital. Imbilical hernias are another type of hernia but I am not real familliar with those. I have had three preemie boys and two of the three have had hernias.

Umbilical Hernia in Children - Topic Overview
What is an umbilical hernia?
An umbilical hernia is a bulge in the abdominal wall within the navel that sometimes contains abdominal tissue, a loop of intestine, fat, or fluid. An umbilical hernia is usually present at birth. But it is often not noticeable until the umbilical cord stump falls off, a few days to a couple of weeks after birth. Normally, umbilical hernias are not painful or dangerous.

Umbilical hernias can vary in size from less than 1 cm to more than 4 cm across. However, they rarely measure more than 2 cm across.

What causes an umbilical hernia?
The ring of muscle and other tissue that forms where blood vessels in the umbilical cord enter a fetus's body is known as the umbilical ring. Normally the umbilical ring closes prior to birth. If it does not, tissue may bulge through the opening or weak spot through the navel.

It is not known exactly what prevents complete closure of the umbilical ring, but many factors that affect the developing fetus are probably involved. For example, in premature infants, it may be that the abdominal wall is not fully developed before birth.

What are the symptoms?
The main symptom of an umbilical hernia is a soft bulge under the skin of the navel. You may be able to push part of the hernia so that it temporarily moves back into the abdomen. The hernia may be more noticeable when your child sits or stands upright or strains abdominal muscles during normal activities such as crying, coughing, or having a bowel movement.

How is an umbilical hernia diagnosed?
A health professional can usually diagnose an umbilical hernia by examining your child's abdomen and evaluating the size, shape, and appearance of the hernia.

How is it treated?
Most umbilical hernias close on their own without treatment by the time the child is age 4 or 5 years, and usually within the first year of life. Surgery typically is needed to repair an umbilical hernia that persists after age 4 or 5, because it is unlikely to close on its own.

The likelihood that an umbilical hernia will heal on its own depends in part on how large it is.

Save money on an ER visit by calling his doctor. They can check and see if that is what it is. If it is a hernia they can help you with finding a surgeon, or recommend you to the nearest Children's Hospital. An ER visit, even with insurance can be around $75, while a visit to the doctor is only $10-15.

It's better to be safe than sorry. Please just take the baby to the doctor. Why do you think the baby has a hernia anyway? If you notice something wrong, don't just sit there. The baby might be in pain.

if you think your child has a hernia get him to the doctors soon because it may need to be removed. Like the people that said earlier they hurt when you touch them. Yes it can be true, but my daughter had an umbilical hernia and it didn't hurt her.

My son began struggling with his sleep at around 2 or 3 months so its familiar for a 7 week previous to do this. sure she would be spoiled yet provided which you carry her perpetually. in case you're in trouble-free terms conserving her to place her to sleep and unsleeping cases to play then its no longer likely to ruin her. have you ever tried a pacifier or swing? A 7 week previous cant self soothe so no you shouldnt enable her cry till you get too under pressure. Then walk out of the room and pass back in after a minute to calm your self down.
