Raise some of the skills that the job requires, and make sure that your Sims motives are all power up to high, have a required amount of friends. If you don't have this then your Sim will come back without being promoted. The more times you're promoted the harder it gets.

boost up stats depending on the job type till u get promoted
keep doing so till u get to the top

you have to have enough skill points in certain areas, have enough friends, and go to work in a good mood! Oh, and don't be late...
