The porch was once covered by indoor/outdoor carpet, but it is now just nailed down sheets of new plywood. Can we just paint and seal it? Should we replace it with smaller wood planks? Any suggestion is appreciated!

Hopefully it is treated plywood, but even if it is, being directly exposed to the weather, it won't last long. I think it will eventually warp at the very least.
You can paint it if you want to but it should be sealed and a base coat applied.

You might consider covering it with treated planks.
Inquire at your lumber supplier.

It should have a greenish tan color unlike regular plywood.

Yikes... I'd pull the plywood up, and check the JOISTS first !! See if they are sound and solid... if the PORCH doesn't get any water on or under it, I would guess the plywood would work if it is 7/8 - 1 inch and sealed.

Take CARE when putting the plywood back down... snap down chalk lines to make sure all the nails (screws would be better) go into the joists !! I had to repair a deck where the "construction crew" had just thrown down nails at random.

Liquid Nails would also help hold the plywood down to the joists.

i wouldnt paint plywood. I suppose you could, but i dont think it would last as long as you would like.... if you liked your carpet, then go to a discount hardware store (mr.seconds) and get some new indoor/outdoor carpet. it also depends? is this porch covered or is it open to the elements? whatever you do decide to put down, you have to make sure its sealed to prevent water damage. thats a tough question. but good luck! whatever you choose to do, im interested in how it turned out so keep me posted. :)

all porchs need to let the water .leave,
ply will not allow this ,
you will need, 5 1/2 wide treated boards, ,will a rolled egde
very nice ,and will last for years to come ,unlike the ply wood
once you have it installed, seal it with a really good sealer
and use screws ,to install it , that way it can expand, and contract ,just a little

i would use an epoxy paint, similar to the type used on garage floors, , then you could add colored chips to it to give it some texture, dont forget to seal the edges,

john has a good idea,so if you decide to screw it down, use stainless steel screws.
