A realistic budget would be $ 200 a day plus flight if you stay in hotels, eat out and go sightseeing in a sensible way and have the odd drink.
If you are willing to stay in hostels, do your own cooking, drink water most of the time (not beer or coca cola,) and only go to the places that are free to visit, you might make it for as little as $100 a day, or less if you hitch hike and stay with friends you make under way.
If you like partying, being drunk every night, go shopping often, see all the sights and go to theme parks (like WarnerBross) or do like things like going to shows and concerts you might need a lot more, like about $ 400 a day plus the price of your intercontinental flight.

If you've never been, don't want to worry about having to speak German, then I suggest taking a guided tour. There are plenty of US companies that have tours to Germany and they make all the arrangements - plane and land tour. Just sit back and relax :)
