Ok, its quite simple.
1-If your using an instant messenger, try to establish a direct connection with them, by either sending pics/files/folders/music,etc. Or by video chatting.
Open up command prompt. Start>Run>type cmd.
Then type in netstat -n. You'll have a list of active connections. You'll be looking for a "foreign" address. Its best to look at the list BEFORE establishing the direct connection and then refreshing it by typeing netstat -n again, and looking for the address that wasn't there before.

2- Some email services provide the senders IP address in the mails header. e.g. John Doe (IP Address) email@email.com.

Hope that helped.

Yes, they can track down your actual address, but they'd have to go through your ISP and it takes a court order to do that. There would have to be a legitimate reason provided to a court as to why there was need, e.g., evidence of a crime. You can still likely contact your ISP and request a different IP address if you're concerned about someone targeting your computer for some reason. Someone actually can hack another computer if they know the IP address and it's static, but if you have a modern machine with basic security software present, it's not usually going to be easy. On the other hand, if you have someone who knows what they're doing and they have your static IP, they'll probably eventually get in to some extent if they're dedicated. It would help to know more what the situation is, but if you haven't done anything blatantly illegal, you don't need to worry about someone getting your physical address. And if you think you're being targeted by someone, just contact your ISP and request a change of IP address.

Well, instead of going through alot of "Mumbo-Jumbo", there is a Free, and easy website that you can visit to get detailed information about the Person's location, and more, based upon their IP Address. I should give you a word of advice, though, this website gives you only 3 free IP look-ups until you have to register - But, the best part is that the register is free, too, and you can get up to 50 look-ups per day!

Without further due, here is the website that you may find helpful: http://www.ip-adress.com

Thanks!

it is not that too simple to track anyone's IP address. others are advising you to have them send emails so you can get the source of the email. this was available before like yahoo. but recently because of too much malicious attacks are occuring, some web host are no longer displaying it. and even providers are protecting their customer's privacy. the command prompt will not exactly display the real IP address of the other side your chatting with, but it will only display as source from "foreign country". this is because most of the users are using internet security or some programs that could hide their IP. otherwise, you will see what country they are from but not their IP.

You lose their trust forever. But you can make an official report at the police station and let the special police cyber team do the tracking for you.

if they've ever sent you an email you can -right click- on their "FROM" in the email and select "properties" and it should tell you the IP address.

Couldn't you just ask them what country they are in? That would be less sneaky.
