JK Rowling started writing in 1989 or so and the first book (year one at Hogwarts) took place in 1991. Because the years are consecutive, the final book takes place in 1997 despite the release in 2007.

Some facts to support this include:
James and Lily Potter were murdered in 1981 when Harry was a year old -- he attended Hogwarts after turning 11.
Sir Headless Nick was 500 in the second installment (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) in 1992. Dying in 1492, this is a 500 year difference, indicating the story does happen in the 1990's.

Hope this helps you!

PS. There is actually an error in the timeline. Dudley throws his playstation out the window during the summer of the fourth book (1994), but playstation wasn't released until December 1994. A minor slip up, but doesn't really compromise the timeline :)

In the last book you see that James and Lily Potter were killed in 1981, which must have meant that Harry was born in 1980, which means the story took place from about 1991-1997.

Harry Potter's birthday is set as 31 July 1980. The following is from the website www.answers.com (God I love google!) All the other dates in the story thus derive from this date. This would make this past July 31st his 27th birthday.

"Rowling later gave further confirmation of this originally disclosed timeline anchor when, in early 2006, she donated a hand-drawn copy of the Black family tree to a charity auction for Book Aid International.[8] In that document, she included the birth year of one of Harry's classmates, Draco Malfoy, as 1980.[9] She had previously, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, revealed Draco's birthday to be (like that of Harry) late in the school year, and past January.[10] By means of these two devices, she thus also clearly set the birthdate of her main character as 31 July 1980, and thus, by extension, reinforced her original signalling that the Sorting Ceremony which takes place on 1 September in her original book was envisioned by her as taking place in the chronological year 1991.[1]"

check jkrowling.com,it's a fact. yes harry and hermione and ron entered hogwarts in 1993. they had book 7 in 1997-98. so 19 yrs fr book 7 is actually 2017,not 19 yrs fr d time book 7 is filmed which is 2009. v confusing. but harry potter series is all in flash back mode.

In Book 2, Nearly Headless Nick is having his 500th deathday party, and it is said at the party that he died in 1492, which would make the year of Book 2, 1992.

Well in the chamber of Secrets nearly headless nick celebrates his 500th deathday. And during the deathday party Harry saw a cake that said Nick died in 1492 and then you add 500 years and you have 1992. (pg 133 in american paperback)
