There was a huge hornets nest in a tree near our barn then suddenly some thing tore it to shreds and now there are no hornets in the vicinity ??

My guess is a Raccoon, Striped Skunk, or Fox.
These animals usually prey upon the nests during cooler weather however, when the nests are not as active, and eat all the contents.
I'm really curious to know how far North in the U.S. you are. The nest may have been annihilated because of a lack of any other kind of food source available, maybe due to heat and drought.

don't be courageous or honorable, sneak up on them at night and spray poison interior the main front. Bald face hornets are VEE-SHUSH and could injury you badly. don't experience any guilt yet do no longer take any sunlight hours damaging aspects.
