So what's your question? All I see here is an opinion.

I'm an American (as you say). I've been playing soccer since 1977. While its true it isn't the most popular sport over here and we are not a footie mad nation, I've probably got more experience playing the game than you. I've coached youth soccer for ten years now and there are an increasing number of former players now that do so. Its just a matter of time, my friends, the US may just have a star above our hearts before say Mexico (not popular, but had to say it) sorry a los mexicanos. Anyway, its growing and I'm proof. Lots of love, west o the pond.

Soccer is called what it is here cause we already had a game called football prior to the popularization of it.
Soccer, ahem, excuse me, FOOTBALL is gaining ground here, and it will continue to grow, there is a whole generation coming up that was raised on it!
Contrary to popular belief, alot of Americans like "football" and don't belittle it, trouble is, all everybody hears, or more correctly stated all they WANT to hear is some angry yank bashing the game so they can in turn bash America. And I don't mean to imply the asker was bashing.
Any and all sports should be promoted as they are a fun way to enjoy one's self either as a spectator or a player, and if games such as "football" can help close the gaps and misconceptions between countrys, then lets play!

ah man u have no idea how long soccer would become popular. all the people in the states care more about american football, baseball, NASCAR, basketball, and freaking college sports. but it would be a while for soccer to be in the top 4 sports in the us. but i think that the MLS teams should get upcoming stars or popular veterans. all i kno is if they manage to get 5 great players then will start to climb the ladder for sport popularity in the us.

i'm an american & i absolutely love soccer. I hope tat soccer becomes very big in the U.S. so i will actually hav sum1 2 watch games with other than my father & sister. But, I dont think that it'll happen any time soon. Maybe the whole david beckham thing will make sum americans soccer fans but not a lot of them will change their idea of soccer they just go 2 the games 2 see Beckham & when he's not playing its back to an empty soccer stadium.

How Ironic - I find a lot of Europeans opinions on football rubbish!
We have more in common than you think...
It doesn't matter where you are from, I think some people have played the game and have enough experience to comment intelligently on it.
But honestly, I'd rather talk to a football moron with an open mind than one of the numerous know-it-alls who's ignorance won't allow another opinion to creep into their closed mind.

There's hope. I work in San Francisco and last world cup I think you would have been surprised at the crowds there were at restaurants. The matches here were either morning or noon, and at lunch I would go to an italian neighborhood to stand on the street (it was too crowded inside) to watch the big screens. There were so many people standing out on the street in front of it you could barely see. ONe morning I went to a german restaurant to see Germany vs. Argentina, I got there early and barely got a seat.
We're not typical of the whole country unfortunately, and it does get frustrating having our national team beat mexico and winning concacaf time and time again and no one caring.
So maybe there's hope, there is in certain spots of the country.

Sorry, man, but thats never ever going to happen.
Football (what 'we' call football) is the sport here. Americans love it, its the most watched TV event and has been from the beginning. A few seconds of commercial time during the superbowl costs millions and millions because the audience is so vast. They are targeting women for the audience now and it is working. Football is huge.
You can say 'we' are being exclusive by having our own super popular obsessive sport which is different and 'our own,' or whatever. That is probably true for some Americans, but not all, not me. Its just too established now though, the audience looks forward to football season more than anything. Fathers miss their children being born because the superbowl is on. I have played soccer in highschool, and I don't watch it. I do watch football, I've never played it. Soccer is watched over here, some people are crazy about it, but it will never eclipse 'football' unless something crazy happens like what happened with the baseball strike. My work is having problems right now because everyone is trying to make sunday their day off.
Seriously though, why do you care anyway? You like 'soccer'? Awesome!! So do many other people everywhere, including America. Others like 'football,' why can't you see the similarities instead of the differences? Everyone loves sports, YAY!
I don't think only homos play soccer, or your football. Soccer is freaking hard to play, it takes skill. Why do you let people bother you like that? screw them!
I think it is a poor idea to project that opinion on "americans"
I am american, are you going to hate on me because I like something I enjoy? If you are, you are not better than the 'americans' who have caused you to think that way in the first place.
Love your football, call it whatever you want to. I'll like surfing and football, and I'll call my american football just football. There really doesn't need to be any hard feelings here over sports.

Well, I'm an American, and, thank you (I think). There is in fact a lot more interest in soccer here than many people would like to admit. Some facts:
----USA has qualified for 5 straight World Cup tournaments.
----USA reached WC quarterfinals in 2002
----USA has won 2 straight Gold Cups
----1994 W.C. hosted in USA is still the best attended ever
----USA Women's team has won 2 World Cups and 2 Olympic Gold medals
----USA under 20 team reached this year's WC quarterfinals (including a victory over Brazil)
Yes---it is encouraging.

THANK YOU.
WHAT PEOPLE (REST OF THE WORLD)REFUSE TO SEE IS THAT THERE ARE MILLIONS PLAYING "AMERICAN SPORTS" SUCH AS BASEBALL, BASKETBALL, AND......NASCAR. BUT THAT JUST 1 MILLION ALONE. 1 MILLION PLAY FOOTBALL (SOCCER) HERE.....JUST NOT AT A HIGH LEVEL. SO WOULDN'T THE CHANCES OF A "ZIDANE" LIKE PLAYER BE 1 IN A MILLION??? IT MEANS WE HAVE THAT ONE....AND 100 OF A MILLION BEING, PIRLO OR EVEN JOE COLE CALIBER......SO WE CAN BE STRONG TEAM IN THE FUTURE. JUST THAT, MORE ENCOURAGEMENT, BETTER COACHES THAT KNOW THE SPORT AND POSSIBLY TAKING AWAY SALARY CAPS THAT DOESN'T LURE STAR ATHLETES TO WIN JUST 1.5MILLION ON SOCCER, AND PREFER TO GO TO OTHER SPORTS
