I think that every topic on earth has been covered. Except for one - which I have researched quite thoroughly and I am going to be ghostwriting for a very famous sports figure. I can't tell you what it is. But believe me it isn't out there.

Let me tell you how I came across it. I had a thought based on observing a person I know. I got to thinking about what kind of a book could affect that person's life. And the idea hit me.

So I started doing my research. I scoured Amazon for books on the topic. I visited B and N and spent two hours with an assistant manager searching for books on the topic. Nothing. I searched many other book sources. Again nothing.

I knew I was on to something. I discussed the idea with the person I ghost write for. A few days later, he went to his publisher. I had a teleconference call with a senior editor there in which I explained the idea to them. They were dumfounded it doesn't exist. They wanted it yesterday!!

I had to prepare a book proposal which is a very specific document. It describes the book, who it is aimed at, what books are similar etc. It is the selling tool the editor at the publishing house takes into the meeting with the acquisition committee to push the book for you. It is the single most important thing you will ever write when working on a book.

The result - it is a GO and advances will be made available.

The trick is all in the research. Look around you. Discover an issue you see isn't being handled or not being handled properly. Then start your digging. Is it out there? Who would buy it? How can I handle the story so that I am a part of the solution not the problem? Where can I get the information needed to write it? Who do I have to interview? What do I have to know?

Do you have to be an expert on the subject now? Absolutely not. However, you have to be able to figure out how you can become an expert. You cannot cheat readers. Write about what you know applies here. Big Time.

Just keep looking. I am sure there are many things like the thing I found that need addressing. Use your question as an ice breaker. Ask it of your parents at dinner. Ask your friends. What would you like to read that isn't out there? It is a great way to get a publisher very excited in a big hurry. It happened so fast, I was shocked myself!!

i've never been one to say no to a fantasy...i'm pretty easy going when it comes to fiction tho....as long as its not some cheesy romance novel or just something that is really bad writing...
