I agree with Matthew's very perceptive answer but disagree with his (and the reference web page's) rationale of the sequence. M, B and P are all formed at the lips. N, D and T are all formed by contact between the tip of the tongue and the forward part of the hard palate. The three pairs M and N, B and D, and P and T are letters pronounced, respectively, voiced (e.g., in saying "me", the m is "hummed"); slightly voiced (e.g., "bee"); and plosively (e.g., "tee").
