Tell me about it. Who knows why these mine bosses behave as they do? Probably to save their own a**es or, if they have any shred of humanity, maybe it turns their stomach to think that they caused 6 men (add to that 3 more) to lose their lives. My father and 3 members of his crew were killed 8/24/79 in a mine about 10 - 15 miles from this one doing the exact same thing. He was the foreman of his crew and they sent him into an area of the mine that they shouldn't have been in (with a green crew) to roof bolt and pull pillars. Then, afterward, they tried to say it was my dad's fault because it's easier to blame a dead man than take the blame yourself. My mom was two months pregnant with me so I grew up not knowing my father. I am proud he was a miner and I am proud of all the miners and rescue workers, and their families for what they have been doing and how courageous they have been through this. Renewable energy isn't the complete answer. We can't take the coal industry out of these communities or their economies would probably collapse. But there has to be a better way. You can't tell me with all the technology we have now that they can't somehow have communication devices with each miner that would still work 3 miles underground. I agree with you. Every miner knows this is a risk but there has to be a better and safer way. We can't predict nature and completely eliminate every fatality or disaster but it seems to me like we could and should continue to reduce the risks. I hope the families of these miners will be taken care of by the mine (financial assistance, college funds for children, etc.) I know we weren't. God bless the miners, rescue workers, families, and communities.

It is only the owner who is caliming seismic activity (earthquake) caused the mine cave-in. Non of the scientists ahve or will confirm this. As a matter of fact the local seismic monitoring has denied the was any unusual activity before or after the accident.
Many things can cause cave-ins such as this,
Improper shoring of the tunnels.
Improper excavation methods in areas of known flaws (cracks) in the rock formations.
Improper drainage methods.
Improper ventialtion and spark control systems. Coal gas is highly volitile. A static spark can set of a fire and/or explosion.
The list goes on and on.
This company has been cited for many safety deficiencies. Many which have not been address properly.
This disaster could likely have been averted or at least lessened by adhering to safe procedures and practices.

The miracle I pray for is that the mine proprietors will launch a number of their earnings to predrill only before the place the miners are going to progression next, this way they could have a line present day interior the form of an incident and that they are in a position to right now pump out water, pump in oxygen, clean water and communicate with them utilizing GPS and radios on each and each miner which will artwork regardless what intensity they're working at! All of those issues ought to be required via the federal mine risk-free practices fee to boot as bio video reveal units that deliver their indicators via radio continuously.

It is believed by some mining experts that the retreat mining strategy is to blame for the collapse because the supports are slowly being mined out which seems very possible. They have said that there was no earthquake, and most likely that these "bumps" are being caused by the mining itself not natural causes. I continue to pray for these families, hopefully mining strategies will be changed in the future to prevent further mining catastrophes.

AND if they put transponders on the miners so could locate them immediately as they do in other countries. Why is it so primitive here.? Because the owners want to save money? The 3 yesterday were certainly needless .

My mother heard on the News tonight that the mountain is shifting. That is why the side of the mountain is coming down inside the mine.

Well, that could be true but more importantly this is an indicator that we need to search for other sources of energy. LIKE renewable energy. Solar power, or wind power, or hydro power. Ways that are less damaging to the environment and more safe for people to work.

to be honest i think that the owner should stop sending people in there until they do something about this problem i think that if Mr.Murry doesn't stop this then all family's of the victims should sue him for loss and grief i think it caved in on it's own but i don't think he cares about anything i think he just want's his money to keep his company running which i think is bullcrap !!!!!
he doesn't look sorry for anything that he has done to these people's family really i don't even think he has had any remorse about this whole thing but that is me i really really think they should stop all people from going in to the mines until we can find away to get these people out stop mining until 2008......
thank you for letting me answer your Question

The practice is called "retreat mining," and it's very dangerous, although it's been approved by the US government for decades.
