If you are British with no criminal convictions ever then you do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. You fill out a visa waiver on the plane and hand it in when you arrive.
If however you have had a conviction even a driving one then you must contact the American Embassy in London and ask for an interview where they will decide if they will give you a visa.
They have become very strict and if you are caught entering on the waiver programe with a conviction then they will send you straight back and you will not be allowed to enter again.
Sounds harsh and I personally think they are going overboard with this but this is the advise that is given from the US embassy at the moment.
In most cases you can enter with no problems at all.

It depends on the length of time you want to stay and any past criminal convictions, even minor ones. If you feel you may have a problem contact the US Embassy in London. Also you can look at the following site
http://www.destinationamerica.co.uk
It covers the visa waiver rules and the visa rules and is very easy to understand.
