OK, that makes two humans, do I hear three? I think people are beginning to wake up. Why don't we start a website and have people come there and vote what we want, agree on a policy we want the FCC to follow and contact Congress with the figures of what say the majority of the public? Politicians follow polls so much. Even a few volunteers could get it started. I'm tired of homogenized opinion and PBS is political Broadcasting, where the view of the public? I suspect a lot of people on both sides of the fence must agree on something. A different page for each committee working on each question for the poll and open to the public to add comments on each committee's work and to volunteer to help. It would be a model for other groups on politics, ethics or legislation and getting rid of legislation, that's a biggy. Free exchange of ideas, everyone represented or at least category and we could argue about those. People have to be the new reasonable government. Waiting for leaders to do anything hasn't worked and stopping a few things too. The less they do the better it seems to be. They'r downright dangerous when they try to think. I suspect common sense is better. We could access common and not so common sense. Leaders are overworked anyway. Just 50 million volunteers doing a few hours here and there. Who knows what funding may come in for a quantum computer and free satellite time. In the days of Jefferson and those, the people did everything. They set up a whole government. Voting power represents another power than government over the government. We've gotten spoiled and expect someone else to do everything for us. The only way to come together is to communicate and negotiate.

The First Amendment to the Constitiution of the United States reads:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Therefore, no law can be created to dictate what "balance" of news is to be reported by the media. No one can tell the media you must report only 50% bad news and 50% good news, or any other combination. That would open the door for censorship, editorialism, and the potential for important news to be skipped because it would throw off the "balance."
I work in the news media and my suggestion would be that if you find the news to be depressing, turn it off and go for a walk.

I expect that this does happen in some parts of the world, especially in countries where they have a `dictatorship. However in the United Kingdom, we do not like censorship of any kind, whether the news is good or bad we allow the individual to decide what they will and will not listen to or believe. One persons idea of `balance` is not the same as another, so who will be the one to decide what that `balance` should be? Who `watches the back ` of the balancer?

I've always said that they need to balance it out. I love D/FW Fox 4 news (texas), they are so much fun and even though they shed alot of bad news they do a great job in telling good news and funny stories. So i don't watch or listen to any other news station.
The funniest thing i just saw was that a bunch of kids tee-peed they're entire school 2 days before it starts, thought that was hilarious.
I already know that people get shot, stabbed, children abused animal stabbed and starved, my heart breaks and i can't stand to hear it, so some up-beat news and funny stories are much needed!

The news media should be responsible for
getting the monumental stories out for the day
if they have a nose for journalism and know
that the world counts on them for responsible
reporting of the facts that can shape the world in
positive ways not just bring people to tears.

I really must admit, The world seemed a bit less jumpy when News didn't travel instantaneously.
It was nice when it took a few days, to a week, for the whole world to know what was happening a few thousand miles away.
No to the regulation.
I think the people can do the regulating just fine.
In the U.S, we've been spanking some of our Newspapers and Television Station News Outlets for a few years.
They are slow to respond to their customers demands but they do seem to be taking notice.

There is something else that you haven't mentioned.
It seems as though some some people are convicted, by the news media, before going to court.
The news media should be limited as to the content of news reports concerning upcoming court cases. News reports can influence a prospective jurors decision.
Reports concerning certain cases, should be approved, by the court.
After the trial is over, the restraints could be lifted.
But that would probably trample all over the right of freedom of speech.
So................what is the answer????????????????????????

Can't control what happens every day, there may not be any good news some days. Also most of the important things that happen in the world are bad. When there is nothing interesting in the news then you know that its a good period because no one is doing anything bad.

So are you saying if there is a lot of bad news in a given day you just don't want to know? You want to live in denial?
You want to pretend that everything is all warm and cuddly?
Welcome to the real world. Sometimes bad things happen. Sometimes lots of bad things happen.
Don't bury your head in the sand.
