Well, here's what Wilkepedia has to say on the subject...
In the final episode of the last series, Blackadder Goes Forth, Baldrick announces he has a cunning plan that might just save them from "going over the top", although it is never revealed what this plan might be (other than that it is as cunning as a fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University). Blackadder, perhaps realising he cannot postpone going into battle (and certain death) indefinitely, dismisses it, telling him "Whatever it was, I'm sure it was better than my plan to get out of here by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here?"
I was only watching this episode on Saturday morning whilost doing my ironing, and I would love to know what the smelly little fella had in his head that time!

yes I remember that last episode - it was like Baldrick had finally come up with a plausible plan to get everyone out of trouble, but Blackadder didn't want to know and took them all over the top to their deaths!
Perhaps his plan was to explain the futility of war to the world's idiot leaders and to get them all to make peace and live in harmony! (No.........it has to be the turnip option for sure!)

Wasn't it something like pants on head and pencils up nose to prove he was mad?
There may have been a plan after that but that's the one i remember
Edit, Oh no that was Blackadders plan, sorry misread the question.

Maybe it was to defect - Baldrick could have recited his poem 'The German Guns' again!
"Boom boom boom boom."
And if they had defected they could have spent the rest of the war "teaching nuns how to boil eggs."

I doubt the writers thought one up, they'd probably say it could have been anything you think it was.
