George W. Bush....really..hear me out.
He was elected with the narrowest of majorities in the Electoral college. He actually lost the popular vote.
He is now one of the most unpopular presidents in history.
Yet, despite the arguing and dissent he is still president.
No coup d'etat, no revolution, no civil war, no home grown terrorists, no death squads, no concentration camps.
Just people working within the political system crafted by the Founders and amended just a few times over the centuries to elect a new leader. A judiciary that is unafraid to tell the President or the congress that they are wrong. A military that has never overthrown an administration.
In other words, a system that was created by the Founders and which still works more than 200 years later.
That is a monument to the intelligence and ideals of the American Founders that is unsurpassed.
A monument not built of stone but of ideas and of dreams.
What could be greater?

Those of you that say the Statue of Liberty really need to introduce yourself to other, far older cultures and civilizations. In no way is the Statue of Liberty even worthy of being acknowledged and it's sickening that there are actually people who think so simply because its 'American.' The greatest two would have to be the pyramids and the Great Wall.
The Egyptian pyramids have stood longer than any other great monument (not counting a few pre-historic structures like Jericho, Newgrange, or the temples at Malta), for nearly 5000 years, and were the tallest structures until the 14th cent.
The Great Wall of China is obvious for its sheer massive size and the fact that it can be seen from space.

Taj Mahal, for sure! That building has inscriptions from Quran and some 35 whole chapters on it!It is made to look like the replica of heaven (as described in Quran) and it has some 450 different types of gems caved into the walls. The plan of the builder (Shah Jahan) was to make the excact same building on the other side of the river (I forgot the name),but made from black stone so it would present something opposite (in this case the emperors grave, the white one is the empress's grave).Pyramids are also great, but not so beautiful as Taj Mahal...

The Menin Gate in Ypres.
Every evening at 8:00 pm the traffic stops and the buglers from the local fire brigade play "The Last Post".
I can never see it without being deeply moved.
**EDIT**
I suddenly realise that many people will have never heard of the Menin Gate. It commemorates those thousands of British and Empire soldiers whose bodies were never found but who nevertheless gave their lives for the freedom of the western world.

the greatest monument ever i beleive are the egyptian pyramids because they are in great condition and have lasted several thousands of years almost from the begginings of civilization.
chichen itza, machu pichu, the taj majal, many of the mosques in istanbul, the great wall of china are all great but the pyramids have lasted longer and are the best.

I would have to agree that the graves of soldiers who have given their lives in war is the greatest monument(s).
