Hello my daughter is in 8th grade, and she is playing the violin. Her goal is to become concertmaster. Her competitors are playing Wienawski, and Mendelssohn
my daughter's wondering whether she should play Lalo, or Tchaikovsky (not the 3rd movement but the intro.)
Any suggestions for the piece she should play?

For me, I would much rather hear someone play a simpler piece that is filled with nuances of expression than a more complicated piece that is nothing more than a technical showcase. I attend many concerts and nothing bores me more than watching some gifted performer try to impress the audience with some seemingly endless display of razzle-dazzle technical virtuosity. And, nothing moves me more that a sweet, simple piece played by someone who obviously knows and loves the piece intimately.

In the 8th grade, I say let your daughter play something she absolutely loves to play and let her play it with all her heart.

Good luck.

Probably Lalo, given the choice. How about the 3rd movement of the Max Bruch Violin Concerto? It's amazing! Many conductors in schools would give the Mendelssohn player the first chair, because of the popularity of the concerto.

Wherever she sits, it';s only an 8th grade orchestra. Tell her to keep at it, and eventually to learn the entire Tchaikovsky and also, the killer Beethoven, or a difficult Paganini.

Also, some become specialists in Baroque concerto on original instruments of the period- copies of. Those concerti played on replica baroque violins are exquisite.

ive been playing the violin since the 4th grade and im now going into the 10th grade. i have tried out for ac 5 times and made it 4/5, so i would have to say that she should go with the piece that she is more comfortable playing or the one that she has been playing for a longer time. i think its best that she plays a piece that she can give her all on even though it may be a littler easier then the other. i think shed get a better mark that way.

she should play the piece she either knows better or loves more ... anything else would just be a rehearsal
