Of course you will need money. You will also need transportation. To really see many key areas in the south and western US you need an automobile. There are not many passenger trains in those areas, and buses do not work well for seeing places in the US. You will also need a passport and a B-2 Visa (unless you are planning to work for money while in the US, then you need a B-1 Visa). The Immigration officer when you arrive will assign a departure date. This may be extended by applying to the Department of Homeland Security. (It used to be a lot easier before the World Trade Center was destroyed). You also need a plan, even with a year you will only be able to see select sites in the US.

Mainly money unless you plan to do alot of camping it can get quite expensive. Amtrak has some really good deals on long term travel, if you like train travel.

If money isn't an issue I'd do it yourself. Planned long term trips by travel agencies & such can get really expensive and don't allow much leeway from the set plan. If you do it yourself and find a place you want to spend more time in there's nothing to stop you.

Just find a place you'd like to visit, set up everything online and go. Then before you leave do the same. Or if you go the Amtrak way you can go from one end of the country to the other for like $99. with lots of layovers plus I think about 3 places of your choice you can stay up to a month and not have to pay extra.

If you're coming here from abroad you need a passport, maybe a visa but you can find out that info here.
