Usually I pull the plug from the wall but if i shut the switch off doesn't that take away the "Surge" protection and leave the equipment vulnerable to lightning and surges.What if I do nothing and leave the surge unit on and lit..Joe

most likely what you have is a surge "supressor" not true protection against a lightning strike. there is video of lightning hitting cable and the bolt coming out of the tv and hitting a lamp across the room. unplug your surge strip from the wall,

The surge protection is actually wired in before the switch and performs its function whether the power switch is turned on or not. Still if you are turning off the equipment anyway, not a bad idea you might as well unplug the surge suppressor and be completely safe. Remember it is a surge SUPPRESSOR not a complete eliminator.

Best option is to unplug it. Second best is to leave it on an operable. If you just turn it off lightning can still come through it.

When you unplug it there is NO electricity flowing so how could it hurt anything?
