where do people get grass seed? (and don't say "Lowe's" or whatever cuz I know that much) I was wondering if they gather the grass seed from under the ground or how do companies get grass seed?

A seed company would allow the grass to grow tall enough to produce seeds at the top. Then they would cut the grass and thresh out the seeds to sell. You don't usually see grass in lawns that is tall enough to produce seed but if you just let it grow that is what happens.

Much of the nation's grass seed is grown in eastern Oregon. The grass is allowed to grow tall enough to flower (yes, the flowers are small and weird) and set seed. Then it is harvested like wheat or other grains, threshed, clean, tested for purity (how much is the grass seed and how much is weed seed--obviously you want to look at the labels on the grass seed for %pure live seed or other designation) .

if you let your lawn get really long, it will actually "bloom" at the tops and produce seeds. generally, you dont see grass that has gone to seed cuz you mow it all the time. it turns to seed at about a foot or two long.
