Yes I was there about 15 years ago. The mountains and the Biltmore Mansion is what I enjoyed the most. For a not too large of town I liked it a lot. Smaller cities are always nicer. The fast pace is less.

Yes, about 9 years ago i was travelling from Florida to Virginia and stopped to visit a friend in Asheville. The city was small, very cool and the surrounding mountains were absolutely gorgeous.
I felt like had come home.
I continued on to Virginia, but 4 months later moved to Asheville and have lived there ever since. It is a mixture of old hippies, savvy businesspeople, rednecks, music lovers and musicians, artists, microbrew lovers, fundamentalist christians, new-age earth-mothers and oddballs such as myself who mostly live here because we want to, not because it's a good place to make money or keep up with the Jones'.
It's mostly a tourist town - a destination along the Blue Ridge Parkway for the spring bloom and the fall color, for Biltmore and Grove Park Inn, but that helps to keep anyone from becoming too strung out on get-rich-quick.
Here's how much i love it: I've taken over 800 photos of just the downtown area:
