Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The man could play any instrument, and was probably the best composer ever. However his habits were fatal. Alcoholism and drug addiction, plus (if you believe the movie) he was a raving lunatic. But musically he was a prodigal genius.
If you listen close enough many of his compositions can be heard mingled into modern music.

Lol. The person that said "Madonna" made me laugh. I would say... Stevie Wonder. We live in a society in which art is tainted by image. Could a blind man be famous in America today? Probably not. How important is image to a guy that can't see images?

I think that is far too broad-based to answer.
You have to take into account the genre, the time period, the instrument, the training level......
That said, ONE of the best is surely Eric Clapton, while another is Benny Goodman.
