Congress consistently lets Bush get away with blatant constitutional violations yet remains powerless to do anything beside whine and complain.

Before you say it won't happen, think about everything else congress lets him do: torture, warrantless wiretapping, invading a country justified by lies and causing the deaths of 100000s of people, ignoring congressional subpoenas, and the list goes on and on.

Remember, Bush controls the dept. of justice, the department responsible for enforcing the law. He would just tell Gonzales (like he does now) to not enforce any law weakening his power, including an impeachment.

lol ... if they say anything he'll just veto it :)

but careful what you wish for, with the patriot act and now Bush's 'ultimate power' initiative ... lets just say I wouldn't be surprised

Congress controls the money. All paychecks to the executive branch would stop because by law Bush wouldn't be president anymore. But there's really no way a president could stop an election because elections are state issues...not federal. If Bush decided to stay in the Oval Office after his term was up he'd simply be arrested for trespass. I'm not even certain he would retain his Secret Severvice detail...at least not to the extent of protecting him from being ejected from the White House. Even a military coup' d etat would fail because there would be no money to pay those in rebellion....soldiers that don't get paid may stay on duty for a short while, but in the end when there's no rations, no heat in the barracks, no fuel and nobody paying the bills, rebellion gets old in a hurry.

Well, how about I answer this way...

On September 21, 2006, Bush submitted a continuation of national emergency, thus renewing Proclamation 7463 of September 14, 2001.

http://www.fas.org/irp/news/2001/09/fr091801.html

In May 2007, Bush signed the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive (NSPD 51/HSPD-20).
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/05/20070509-12.html
(HINT... open the link and search for 'congress')

Unlike the National Emergency Act that sets up Congress as a balance, the new directive:
1. does not contain any provisions allowing for congressional approval or oversight.
2. creates the new position of National Continuity Coordinator without Congress approval
3. negates any requirement that the president submit proof of the existence of a National Emergency to Congress

The Executive Orders that Bush has implemented are here to stay unless they are rescinded or superseded by new ones. That's way too much raw power in place for the next president to (mis)use for their advantage. I hope people consider very carefully when voting next year, because we need a President and Congress that will commit to cleaning up this mess.

When presidents get out of office they usually can make a FORTUNE in the "private sector" because of their very useful world-wide connections. Al Gore is currently worth about $100 million dollars, and people wonder why he isn't running for President - he doesn't want the pay cut! Bush would be nuts to do this, and it isn't going to happen, but I see what you are getting at, and I agree with you.

Isn't it amazing how some people will call you a "wingnut" when you tell the truth? Kind of pathetic, really.

LOL I think you have their number. The executive branch keeps acquiring powers and congress keeps letting him. So why not crown him king and get it over with.
All it would take is a few nuclear blasts and a state of emergency would be called and elections canceled. Who says how long a state of emergency could last.

Would they DO anything? He'd be forcibly removed from the premises. Bush doesn't have the power to cancel the elections. What do you think he is, a dictator?

dream on wingnut....any changes in constitutional procedure require much more than a presidents ok and every out of contol liberal in the pelosi/reid regime would be all over this in a heartbeat. perhaps you might want to read up on constitutional law and then you could answer your own questions and stop wasting peoples time here.

It sounds like a science fiction novel, but I think we can never assume it can NEVER happen. In a real-life scenario, Congress would all be shot before they could do much, or at least those against it (not saying Bush will do this - I think he won't).

They might not be able to. After all, Bush commands the military.

Nothing but dumped his sorry butt in GITMO.
You should realize, that the President is second in line of things a soldier is sworn to protect. The first in line is what Bush would be attacking by such actions.
