I was just looking at this on CottageLiving.com. The person in the article ran the wire through a hole in the dry wall behind the TV and came out on the side of the fireplace. An armoir held the DVD, cable box, etc., which was located next to the fireplace. It looked nice.

One error in your question ... no movies are yet coming out only in HD format. Since HD DVD and Blu-Ray are still a niche product format (less than 10% of total disk sales. In fact HD format disks only just overtook VHS format movie sales ... and you know how often you see them these days!) studios would be crazy to cut off their major source of sales ... normal DVDs. So .... you can save your money and forget the HD DVD (or Blu-Ray) player unless or until you upgrade to a true HDTV (at least 720p / 1080i). Think of it like this. Your TV is the limiting step in that it won't diplay more than 480 (horizontal lines) resolution. While an HD DVD player will output 480p and will play normal DVDs there would be no advantage to buying the HD DVD model. The only exception might be if you need a new DVD player anyway, in which case the Toshiba HD-A2 would be a good choice since it not only plays normal DVDs but also "upscales" them to a form of pseudo HD that look good on a true HDTV (and also allow you to play HD DVDs as well should you wish to pay the premium). But the bottom line is your EDTV has a limited future IF you want a sharper picture. On the other hand if you find the picture acceptable you can ignore all the hype around HD DVD and Blu-Ray and hold fast for at least a couple more years until things sort out and prices come down even further, Hope this helps.

The first 2 posters told you how to wire it. Something to keep in mind though. I have some friends that installed the tv above the fireplace and it looks cool. The problem is that it is uncomfortable to watch. Haveing the tv more than a few feet above the floor gives you a sore neck. Unless you are lying down, having the tv up that high is unpleasant and uncomfotable to watch for more than a short time.

Electrician make a hole in the wall behind the TV and drop the wires down to the plug ins.
You might want to let an professional do this for you. He/she will also be able to suggest ways to hide all the other items too.

Placed over the fire place some wires will show unless you are willing to build a brick wall over the chimney of the fire place. With and opening that allows total access to the chimney.Should you build and outer shell be sure the entire chimney is over lapped with bricks.Along both sides and its front. Then you would not have to worry about smoke or fire damaging the wires.

I have to agree with Morris, placing a tv up that high will surely be a pain in the neck. My brother did this at his cabin and it looked awesome but no one could watch it for more than a few minutes. Just take this into consideration before you do anything.

Perhaps you can drill some small openings into the wall, but I would personally recommend hiring some experts at this if it's possible. Otherwise, just take it slow and think about your possibilities.
