For all the criteria you listed New Orleans is the best city for all of that!

The food there is amazing and is unique to that region. The food in NYC, SF, Miami, ect.. is great but can be found in any large cosmopolitan city but Cajun and Creole is unique to Louisiana.

NO also has some of the most ornate and beautiful architecture in this country and it's very old too. NYC's architecture is impressive but not unique. SF's architecture is also beautiful but some of those homes can get a bit cheesy with how done up they are and newer developments that try to incorporate that SF/Victorian style are just ugly. It's nice just walking around that city and checking out the homes in the Garden District or the old architecture of the French Quarter.

If you like Jazz or blues music NOLA is the place to go for that in addition to Cajun and Zydeco music too. That city has a very rich music history and it is reflected in their culture. So many unique and great sounds come out of that town.

They don't call it the Big Easy for nothing. The bars do not close there and you can drink in the streets. SF has crappy nightlife. NYC's and Miami's are good but you can't beat Mardi Gras and that NOLA spirit! The bars are cheap and make stiff drinks too.

New Orleans is one of the oldest and most historical cities in America and was founded almost 300 years ago. There is so much history in that city. It's been under French and Spanish rule and it's history and architecture reflects that. Many of the laws and the Judicial system are based on Napoleonic Law. Parts of the city are like a living museum and you can find history all over the city.

And the people down in NOLA are such nice and inviting people. They have such great attitudes and are so friendly and nice. They've got southern charm and politeness but in a city setting and still know how to party.

I know NOLA can get a bad reputation for crime and it's progress Post-Katrina, but it is still a great city and one of America's most unique and charming cities in America and is a great place to find all those things you are looking for. I can't wait to go back in February for my 2nd Mardi Gras!

New Orleans is the best city by FAR!!!! The best food.. You can't get real etoufee and jambalaya and gumbo anywhere else, and what's better than a crawfish boil and Abita beer?

Music- zydeco, cajun, jazz... so much culture.

Architecture and history- 2 words. French Quarter.

Partying... ok, we have a little thing called Mardi Gras. Also, Bourbon Street is going 24 hours a day, 365 days a year....

History- Look at the Quarter and once again, just the culture and the voodoo tales.

People- we walk around with go cups with beer from bar to bar, throw beads to complete strangers, Cajun people are awesome..we're united after Katrina... a real feeling of community.

So.. New Orleans wins hands down!

Best people / best place to vacation- Bay City, Michigan - Inexpensive and sitting right on the Great Lakes - the most beautiful summers with winters just made for winter sports!

Best food - Shreveport, Louisiana - Cajun, TexMex, Burgers 'n fries, King cakes for Mardi Gras - whatever - and always good!

Best music - Duh! Detroit of course! Motown rocks.

Best partying - although I don't party much - I suspect Atlanta, GA is a good one - New Year's Eve at Underground is pretty cool.

Best history - Washington DC

Nearly forgot architecture - Charleston, SC - beautiful homes and old southern charm. Rainbow row is really quite beautiful.

Along that same line - Mackinac Island between the Lower and Upper peninsulas of Michigan - no cars allowed and the Grand Hotel is simply beautiful! Longest front porch in the world.

The best city in America is San Antonio, Texas. It has the best food, a big variety to choose from along the River Walk and very reasonable prices. It has the best music and the nicest people with great manners. It has lots of old historical old buildings such as the Alamo. There are horse and carriage rides to tour the old parts of town. It's awesome!!!!

seems that your emphasis is on man-made, not the natural beauty. If it is so, I like Las Vegas the best, then New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, San Francisco.
