For pure Virus Protection without cost, use Avast anti-virus. It's every bit as god as Norton but does not take up the space Norton does with its bloated programming. Updates are also free and automatic. I used Norton for 6 years before I switched and I've never been sorry. Don't forget great Firewall protection as well, which you can also get free from Comodo. Both do what Norton did at NO cost. Take them for a test drive, you've got nothing to lose!

For good virus protection I suggest using more then just an AV.
I think you need and AV, firewall and real-time spyware blocker.
What works for me is AV:AntiVir Firewall: Windows firewall, but Comodo is a good software one. Spyware blocker: spyware blaster and I also use spy bot search and destroy.
All these things are free. Just using a AV will not give you full protection. Just download one of each thing I suggested and you should be protected very well.
www.majorgeeks.com has great download and you can pick which one you want (you dont have to use my suggestions, there are so many programs you can choose from)

Install AVG free anti virus program from www.cnet.com . Key in 'avg' in the www.cnet.com search box and download AVG.
Or, you can go to www.antivirus.com and do an free online virus scanning and cleaning (HouseCall).
