People who study American History fall into 2 categories: They either find it very interesting and do good at it or they find it boring and never fully appreciate it. I was blessed with a great appreciation for it.
The things you need to know about the most are the American Revolution, the Civil War, The Manifest Destiny and the effects that the Spanish-American War had on not only the US, but it's concept of foreign relations as well.

If your teacher is a good one, he/she will tell you what you need to know to pass the class. Most want to see their students earn good grades so it reflects well on them. Like the others said, pay attention. I hated history when I was in school, but now I love it. I am a Teacher's aide at a high school and I have to know a lot to grade the test papers of the students. So I have had to learn a lot that I didn't know before.

No-it is NOT easy - but it will become fascinating if you do the legwork in the beginning. THEN you will enjoy it and won't be able to get enough of it.
The basic concept of this Country is different from that of any other which, by necessity, makes it more difficult to understand. But that's also the hook - once you take the time to understand how we came to be, you'll want to understand why and how we did it.
Learn the basics, read and study, and the rest will come much more easily to you.

Something that helps me is to find a historical novel that i enjoy . As i read the novel i research the story to see how accurate the writer is.I love reading history anyway but this is a fun way to study. You can try this with movies also.

Much easier in comparison to other areas of history, as there is not much US history in the first place as the country is very young. World history is far more interesting despite its difficulty though.

The political isn't, but it's not difficult either.
But there's more to US History than what they teach in school.
