Hi. I am 22 years old and somewhat over weight. My husband and I have been trying to conceive naturally for a little over a year. This proved to be difficult since I only have a period when I take Provera. So this past month my Doctor put me on Clomid 50 mg and Metformin 150mg. I started off with 10 days of provera and then on cycle days 5-9 i took clomid. We had sex on days 12,14,16, and 18. I was feeling really confident because i was having some symptoms (or what i thought were symptoms) of pregnancy however my 21 day progesterone level is 1.8. I am still 2 days away from AF being due. My doc says I could be pregnant but not likely and I am to test on Sunday to see and if not then we will up the dose of clomid. I am concerned however that since my progesterone level was so low that I may never conceive. Anyone else ever experience this?

Hi there,

First, your weight is NOT an issue with getting pregnant unless your being overweight is a symptom of PCOS, which does cause fertility problems. Have you been tested for PCOS? If you have and you don't have it, your weight is not a hindurance. If you have been diagnosed with PCOS, then losing some weight will help to kickstart your reproductive system into gear. As little as 10% may do the trick, which for you is 20lbs. If you haven't been tested, you may want to be just to rule it out.

As for progesterone.... a level of 1.8 means you did not ovulate. Doctors want to see between 4-6 after ovulation for patients conceiving naturally and a level of 10 or more in patients on fertility treatment. Levels would be higher to support pregnancy.

Please don't feel hopeless....it may take a few cycles to get just the right dosage of Clomid to stimulate ovulation. Your doctor may also decide to start progesterone therapy as well. Give it time, your doctor will figure out what dose works best for you.

Good luck.

I have regular cycles, but my progesterone level was below 10. My doctor said it should be above 10 to conceive. I took Clomid for 2 months, but it didn't raise my progesterone level enough. The 3rd month I took Femara and I got pregnant that month. If Clomid doesn't work for you, there are several other fertility drugs and treatments (like insemination in combination with a fertility drug) that your doctor may have you try.

Good luck.

Edit: I didn't have any progesterone treatments to prevent a miscarriage.

I am so sorry to hear your news. Just know that you are not alone. Many women including myself are unable to conceive easily. I have read a lot about Clomid (starting it next cycle) and some women did not have success with Clomid alone. Sometimes the dose has to be upped or another medication needs to be added in with it. Also, I read that if Clomid did not work, women found that fertility injections did. Someone once told me do not ask "why is this happening" only in the bad times....if this is the case we must ask this in the good times too! Think of the blessings in you life....and then you will see the light. Good luck!

Progesterone of 1.8 indicates that you did not ovulate. You need to be at least 4 to confirm ovulation and anything below 10 will most likely not support pregnancy. Upping Clomid will increase your chance of ovulation. Women take up to 250 mg (five pills at the time) and it may take several cycles to find the dose that works for you.

Women CAN conceive with low progesterone, BUT, if it remains low when they become pregnant there is a higher chance of miscarriage without progesterone treatments. How over-weight are you? I was overweight and had a lot of problems, not with conceiving, but I ended up having 3 early miscarriages because of diabetes. Make sure you are healthy. Get your blood sugars checked, try to lose weight. I even had problems with my pregnancy with my son after losing 90 pounds.
