There is a peculiar insect or spider inside my home (at least, I'm assuming this could be what it is as I've never actually seen it) that leaves reddish-brown marks on my walls. It will make a grouping of them, perhaps in a circle or along an uneven horizontal line. The marks are very small. Does anyone know what could be the culprit? Thanks!

It's too bad on your part-not mine that I'm divorcing someone who works for Terminix. That would be a question for them OR maybe google it and see what happens. I, myself, HATE bugs!!!!!!!!! Good luck!

Look like you may have water roaches, you don't see them until you are over took with them. They stay in the walls until you turn off the lights, and they leave a bad smell in the house.
If this is you're house call the bug man and get it sprayed. If you are in an apartment complain to the owner they will have to have it sprayed. It would be nice if you could spend about 3 days with a friend. Those bugs are bad to get ever where.
So you will have a hard time cleaning up. You can vacuum the floors but don't mop for a few days in your kitchen or bath, you don't need to wash up the spray that they put in all the cracks and base boards.
And if you can't afford the bug man you can get a roach poison and put out and get some borax powders and put in under you're sink and places that animals and children cant reach.
Those things lay eggs and hatch ever 28 days so if you are treating them you're self you have to mop and clean and put out more powders ever 28 days for a while.

Hmm..... My best guess is that it's not insects, but water leaking through from the far side of the wall. The staining is consistent with water water leaching chemicals from nails, insulation, and wooden studs.

Check and see if it wipes off with a water-soaked sponge, leaving behind clean paint, or is there a stain reaching back in through the paint. If the paint still holds the stains, you may have water damage building up either due to poorly installed vapor barrier or leaking from the roof.

Okay, have you seen any lady beetles in your house? If you have then what it is, is residue left by "Asian" Lady Beetles. If you've ever heard that lady beetles bite then they are speaking of this beetle. It loves brightly colored houses and especially white ones. They will try to move in for the winter and they leave this nasty smelling residue everywhere. I had them in my house when I was in college. They practically took over my bathroom. Here is some information.
