I was told to use special baby laundry soap, like Dreft, but I dont understand what the big deal is.

I have 3 kids ages 2-6 and I have never used it. If you use your regular detergent and your baby ends up having a rash or sensitive skin then I would use it. Talk to your Dr., but mine thinks it's unnecessary.

You totally don't have to use Dreft. I use Dreft, but mostly because I LOVE how it smells, I've thought about using it to do all my laundry. I use a free and clear detergent on the rest of my stuff and I'm sure it'd be fine to use on the baby clothes. There are also more inexpensive baby detergents you can get. Just make sure the detergent you are using isn't scented as some perfumes, even natural ones, can irritate your baby's sensitive skin (my baby has very sensitive skin and eczema and the Dreft doesn't irritate it). Edit: It sounds like your detergent should be fine. If you put the baby clothes on your baby and you notice his skin become irritated, then switch, but it sounds like it should be gentle on his skin. PS I had all my baby clothes washed so long before the baby was born. I was so excited. I had piles of burp cloths (though I found I needed even more after he was born than I thought I would), blankets, etc. Congrats on your soon to be baby!!

No you don't need Dreft. It is recommendable that you wash the baby's clothes in a perfume/dye free soap until she is older because your baby may be sensitive to perfumes and dyes. I use the Tide FREE, which has no extra junk in it. Then I use the perfume-free dryer sheets (if you are going to use sheets). This has worked perfectly for my 3-month old.
I had this same question before I had my little one and I found the answer in "What to Expect When You are Expecting." I can't tell you which page though, since I gave it to a friend. Basically they said that any perfume and dye free detergent works as well as Dreft, but at a cheaper price.

No. Unless your baby has sensitive skin, you can use regular detergent. I use free and clear detergent (free of perfumes and dyes) on all of our clothes because I have sensitive skin, so I just used that for baby as well. If you want to be on the safe side, but don't want to spend the money on pricey baby detergent like Dreft, try a free and clear detergent, like All Free & Clear.

I got a sample so I did a load when I was pregnant and I loved the smell of her clothes. If your baby has sensitive skin I could see using it but I have washed Madison's clothes with regular soap before and nothing happened. I only use it so all of her clothes have the baby smell. Congratulations!

Yes, Dreft smells good and your baby won't be allergic and break out with it. You should wash your shirts with it too, since the baby skin will most likely touch it.

The reason is that Dreft is not as concentrated as regular laundry detergent, and there is a better chance of your baby not being allergic to it. Tide, Gain, etc. these are all strong detergents. Babies skin is much more sensitive than ours.

Your baby will have very sensitive skin at first, our soap is way to harsh for an infant. They do sell a cheaper version of Dreft at target and there is a new baby all too.

No, but I would look for a gentle detergent that is hypoallergenic. If you use your regular detergent use only half the regular amount . Use these precautions until you find out if the baby has sensitive skin. Many don't/

Some babies are very sensitive after their born. For the first year, doctors recommend using baby detergent, so their skin won't get an allergic reaction to the regular soap. It doesn't have any scent to it, but it's better than seeing your baby get a rash.
