Tampon or no swimming. There is also the moon/diva cup but if you are having a hard time with a tampon those will be practically impossible.
You need to relax when you put it in. Spread your legs apart and put your one hand down there to spread the sides of your vagina apart. Put a little Vaseline onto the tip of the applicator. While sitting down, insert it at an angle towards your lower to middle back. RELAX. It will take some time to insert it, but after you do it will be much easier next time.
Make sure you have the slenderest plastic applicator tampon.
Also use a mirror if you have to.

If you bleed when you have a period, you have a vaginal opening, it's that simple. (There ARE rarely cases where a girl's hymen is entirely intact, but again, it's rare, and if you're bleeding where you can see, you have an open hymen.)
So, your choices are either take some extra time to try and find out where the hole is and practice, or don't swim. If you can't figure it out on your own, won't ask your doctor or mom, etc., there's really not much any of us can do, so I'm not quite sure what other advice you're looking for.
One hint when practicing is to take the tampon out of the applicator and just try to insert the applicator to get the hang of it. Personally, I've always found plastic applicators a lot easier to insert than cardboard, and the more rounded the tip, the easier.
Good luck - once you get the hang of it, it's really not too bad!

Ok this is going to sound weird, but i had the exact same problem. Put a mirror in the floor and stand with your crotch over it with your legs spread apart so you can see everything down there and spread it open with your fingers. Then (and this is the weird part) to find the opening, do the same sort of pushing movement that you do when you go #2. The spot where the vaginal opening should widen slightly, just so you know where it is. Then put foot up on your bathroom counter, so you can still see the opening of your vagina in your bathroom mirror. It might hurt a little to push the tampon in at first. Good luck.

If you can't get it in, it's because you have the wrong hole. In women, the urethra is too close to the vaginal open to even see... it is where your urine is dischareged from. So, take your time, relax, and consider if you feel anything while trying the insertion. If you don't. you're in the wrong hole.
Also, if you are a virgin, and your vaginal opening is tight, look for those "slim" tampons that aren't as wide as regular, and stay away from cardboard applicators.

If you have started your period, then there is definitely a hole because that's where the bleeding comes from. Use the smallest tampon available, try to relax and check out this website for additional help before trying again. You can do it! :)

I have the same problem. Except I am not on a swim team and I don't live in Hawaii. I think that you should ask your mom I think that is what a lot of girls do.

I feel you! I can't insert a tampon for my life! I can't help you with that, but the exact same thing happened to me before. I went to Mexico for a week and halfway through I got my period. I wanted to boogie board soooo bad, but I just had to live through it. If I were you, I would talk to my mom about it because she could help you the best, she knows you. Otherwise, talk to your swim coach about skipping practices that time of month!
Sorry, and best of luck!

You say you know how to use a tampon, but if you haven't ever used one, you might not be doing it correctly. I think you need to talk to your mom about this. If you don't have a mom, try a trusted aunt, older cousin or a friend's mom.

time to see a gynocologist!!!.... there is something called a 'hymenal veil'.... I had it... it can cause lots of grief, but the doc can take care of it in about thirty seconds.... even if that's not YOUR problem, you still need to see the doc to find out why there's such a small opening to your internal organs... I had much trouble with UTI's before mine was opened....
