Back in the 1950s and 60s when Jackie Kennedy's children were born, doctors discouraged women from gaining very much weight. In fact, my OB told me some doctors actually encouraged their patients to smoke while pregnant because it kept their weight gain down and kept their babies small (isn't that scary??) Your doctor can recommend what an ideal weight gain would be for you given your current weight and body type. It's important to try and follow his/her instructions. It's important to eat properly while pregnant. Also, as another poster pointed out, genetics play a large role.

And you are correct...your body will probably never be quite the same shape again after you give birth, even if you manage to regain your pre-pregnancy weight.

Absolutely. You need to gain 15lbs (baby, placenta, water) unless you are very very overweight. My problem with kid #1 was that after the 1st trimester, in order to avoid nausea, I had to eat Then I convinced myself that I had daily cravings for candybars(I gained 50 lbs and lost 25 quickly after delivery). . With kid #2, the problem was just overindulgence (gained back the 25 lbs and lost it quickly, still have that first 25 extra lbs).

well genetic has a lot to do with the weight you gain when pregnant. i dont think its very healthy for a person to only gain 15lbs during a pregnancy but of course with anyhting you have to ask your dr first. Also some women carry all the weight in their stomach and not anywhere else.

All the celebrites that are pregnant nowadays have a lot of help form personal trainer, nutritionis, etc too stay in shape.

Jackie Kennedy had high-risk pregnancies and was sick a lot, so that might be why she didn't gain much weight. It is more important to make sure the baby gets adequate nutrition than to worry about your waistline.

I was worried about that too but my belly is getting bigger but I can still wear my jeans. I just don't button them. Everyones pregnancy is different and I've decided just to forget about it, enjoy my pregnancy and my baby and work on getting my body back to shape when it's healthy for me to do so.

I have 2 children and I gained 42lbs with my son and 45lbs with my daughter. I am back to 107. So gaining is not what's bad it what you loose after you have your baby that matters.
