I assume you mean Elvis Presley. Back in the 1950's, Rock and Roll was black music. The early pioneers were people like Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Ike Turner. Self respecting white people would not listen to Rock and Roll. Elvis Presley brought Rock and Roll to a larger white audience. Keep in mind in those days there was no MTV, most people got their music from the radio. Many people just assumed Elvis was black. A very bright and cynical record promoter (not sure if it was Sam Phillips or the Colonel or someone else) would slip into conversation where Elvis went to school. In the 50's schools were segregated, if you told someone what school you attended, they could figure out your race.

His swivel hips changed the way singers performed as well. The first time he was on the Ed Sullivan show on TV they refused to show him from the waist down because it was considered too racy.

No disrespect intended against anyone who's a fan of his. While i thought he was a good singer he was way overrated. Also was a major pill popper & got involved with an underage girl. Doesn't sound like a hero to me but that's just my opinion & no disrespect intended to his fans.
