We are new homeowners and I am trying to understand how our central air works. We have a brand new unit and thermostat. It is set at 78. Why does the temp in the house go up to 80? It has been running all day. Is this normal? It has been very hot here the past few weeks.....does this have any affect on it? Help me understand..... :)

It is normal. Thermostats are + or - a few degree's meaning it may shut off when the temperature reaches 78 but doesn't turn back on untill it reaches 80 or 81 then cools back down to 78. Try lowering your temp.

When a heating/AC company installs an AC unit, they do a heat load calculation to determine how big of a unit you need. This takes into account lots of factors like square footage of the house, presence of insulation in the attic and walls, dual or single pane windows, whether your house faces the sun, what the climate you live in is like, etc. The size of the AC unit also determines the price of the unit. So, maybe the AC technician made a mistake in doing the heat calculation and the unit is actually too small for your needs. Or, the previous owners cheaped out and went with a smaller, cheaper unit at installation.

You also might have lost some of the freon from your system. You should call an AC technician and have them come out to do a heat load calculation (this is usually free). If the numbers come out right and your AC unit is the correct size, you can have him check the freon level. This is also usually free or a small nominal charge.

the temp is always going to vary a bit, especially if its real hot outside. where your thermostat is located also comes into play. if you set it at 78 and its too warm for you try 76 or lower thats all..

If this system is within a year old your installing A/C contractor should have a year warranty on his installation. Check the equipment for a tag or sticker with their name on it. If you cant find it call your home builder. Sounds like something is definitely wrong with the system. Air coming out of registers should be 15 - 20 degrees cooler than room temp.
