The best quarterback today is probably Peyton Manning. He is a general on the field and gives opposing defenses trouble every year.
1. Peyton Manning
2. Donovan McNabb (when not injured)
3. Brett Favre
4. Carson Palmer
5. Tom Brady
Those are the top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL this season.

You said he'll be good in the next couple of years. That wasn't your question. I think you right he'll be good in a couple of years, but right now today the best QB in the NFL is Peyton Manning. Yards, touchdowns, and wins he has them all.

You state the best today, then hypothethise on Phillip Rivers future performance. Strange. He may very well become an elite quarterback in hte future, but my most vivid memories of him was his Romo-esque end to the season.
As of today, by the numbers it is Manning, Tom Brady,(was down acoupla seasons, but is definately still in hte house), and Carson Palmer.
Closely Following are Drew Brees and Marc Bulger. (some Analysts swap Palmer and Brees, but I am basing it off the last several seasons, not just last season only.)
I realize I just threw away my chance for BA, but I can't ruin my integrity when it comes to football.
*SamBoy, according to the stats, Palmer was elite last season, and he was certainly not healthy. McNabb has a stunning skill set, but you are not elite if you have to add "caveats" to their greatness. He would be the best if......just does not work.

There is no question Peyton Manning is the best right now. And Rivers? The QB with the brightest future maybe. But you have him over Manning, Brady, Favre, Palmer, etc. with hom many playoff wins?

Donovan McNabb is the best QB in the NFL. He has the most complete skill set. The arm strength, accuracy, mobility, decision making and improvisation, toughness. The only thing missing from that set is a set of receivers.
Everyone says he's an elite QB, if healthy. Who has been elite when not healthy? The only other person tough enough to even play injuries as serious as McNabb's has been Chris Simms. McNabb has puked on the field and continued playing, not wasting a perfectly good timeout.
A lot of these other "field generals" wouldn't be anything without their captain's and lieutenants. I must add that the real "field generals" are the coaches.

Right now it is Peyton Manning, hands down.
Next in line would be Tom Brady followed closely by Phillip Rivers.
