Great kingdoms in camparison to what?
Is egypt "black" ? or considered in africa?
do you compare all kingdoms in africa with each other or with the tsars, kaisers , japanese and chinese emperors??.
I dont think you can fairly compare "tribal" lands and their brutal rules to vast long lasting empires such as thost briefly mentioned above. Just as the Aztecs had empires and the north american indians were just tribes.
read the very good book- "Out of America" by Keith richburg reporter of african descent who covered africa.

First things first , Africa is a continent...look at your map...now ask yourself what continent the Middle East is on....they don't call themselves Africans because the Western World has associated being African with that BS Tarzan mythology .....Truth is, the Garden of Eden is the most likely the Fertile Cresecent...archaeologists have found the oldest bones there and in all likelyhood, life started there...Timkuktu was a ancient center of learning...where many Greek scholars got their learning from...it's been said that Arisotle and Socrates were of mixed Race...The Moors traveled several continents including Europe and Asia....even North America...trading with Indians...long before English settlers....or Spanish Conquistadors....nearly 60 percent of the world could be considered Black...brown skin and dark hair with dark hair....Hannibal, Shaka Zula, Rameses, Akenaten, Hasentut, etc....even the Scorpion King movie was based on a true historical character....all the early Pharoahs were from a since renamed region known as Nubia...after Alexander the Great married into and manipulated their dynasty...they intermarried more than ever to perserve this line just like the Royals in England and France did....my message to give your friend who thinks we all sit on stoops and smoke blunts..is to purchase a Kings and Queens of Africa calendar...so he can be reminded of the greatness we came from...forget what you know about tribes of savages....these were civilazations with great customs, inventions, history, music, and art....even stories such as Esop fables....

The west African kingdoms (Mali, Songhay, Ghana etc.) The kingdom I find most fascinating is Axum in the Ethiopian Highlands. Flourishing in an elevated position as a farming society, they also enjoyed a strong trading base with Egypt up the Nile, Sub Saharan African by way of the Riff Valley and India from the Indian Ocean. They were the first African culture to embrace Christianity. In surplus the held grain, beer, and the first recorded use of coffee (Starbucks would be proud)

There is a person here on Yahoo Answers, who fancies himself a "go-getter", and claims to know much about Africa's history, including its greatest kingdoms, and its true legends. So far he has not come forth and offered any information to assist you in your search. I too would like to see this person put his money where his mouth is, and "tell you all you need to know and list sources."

As far as Africa's greatest leaders, Shaka Zulu comes to mind...he's easy enough to look up on the net...the link I've provided should be enough evidence to provide to your friend....so many of our modern day inventions and machinery were invented by African Americans....check it out, you'll be amazed...
