"Different times" ????????????
Like when FDR locked up the Japanese-Americans?
Oh but monitoring phone calls to radical foreign imams who have links to Al Qaeda, THAT'S a gross violation of individual liberties.....
If it weren't for double standards, Libs would have no standards.

Yes he did, in response to a suggestion of J. Edgar Hoover.
However that happened in 1964, when wiretaps were conducted without warrants as a result of a Supreme Court Decision from 1947. In 1970, the Supreme Court reversed that decision and from that time forward, search warrants have been required.

RFK did at the order of Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI, who distrusted King and his friends. The only reason the wiretapping took place was because Hoover had a file on JFk's promiscuity and lovers. Bobby Kennedy had to do it to protect his brother, he wasn't happy about it.

Yes. But with the technology of today the costs doesn't run into the millions.
For God Sakes... What's wrong with some of the far-left libs not recognizing how much of a cash-cow tax increase opportunity this is? You'd think they'd be drooling all over it!

That was before Bobby Kennedy woke up and saw that the fears were being implemented by the J Edgar Hoover and the anti-communist McCarthyite extremists. And, that they were spreading that fear of communism in relationship with the civil rights movement. Bobby Kennedy also worked with Joe McCarthy. But finally woke up about that crap too. Then they murdered him.

Yes, one of King's closest advisors was a communist, and communists were thought to be undermining the US government. A warrant was obtained, and the tapping was specific to just a few people.
It's important to bear in mind that there is a difference with the current situation. Today, under Bush, almost everyone in United States can be wiretapped. There is virtually no warrant or probable cause requirement, and any one of us can be subjected to indefinite detention under the 2006 USA Patriot act amendments.
