The position is called "student mentor". If you go to your guidance counselor he/she would be able to tell you how to find out more about the program (most schools have one). A student mentor usually helps new students adjust to a new school.

If you like helping people you could also check in your county to see if they offer training courses to high school students to answer phones at a crisis center, or something like that.

I know one of our local high schools has a program where the older students mentor the incoming freshmen. The older kids who are willing to participate are assigned 5 or 6 incoming freshmen and they are to be their friend. On the first day for freshmen, the older kids are also there to show the freshmen around. Show them where their classrooms are, etc. The older kids agree by doing this to be the freshmen's friend and to help them when/if needed throughout the year. They are to say hi to them when seen on regular school days and ask how things are going, etc. The program is going very well. The incoming freshmen feel like they know someone at the school and are more comfortable.

PS-I think it's great that you're looking to do something to help out other kids!

I'd call it a peer counselor, myself.

There may or may not be legal issues involved depending on how official this position is relative to the school (annoying and silly, but you never know sometimes). I think it's a great idea, though, and I'd encourage you to look into it. As far as how to approach your school's administration about that. . . I'd just ask, tell them why you think you'd be a good person for this role, and maybe try to come up with another person or two who'd also be interested.

Yes, this happens a lot. You can go to your principal and suggest that you would like to be a student counselor. A couple of the schools that I went to did this and it was very effective becuase students feel more comfortable talking to someone their age than an older guidance counselor.

Something you may not like though is that you are obligated to share any information with the staff that they might find to be dangerous.
