There are times when ending "explorer.exe" can be useful to recover a misbehaving Windows GUI. You can use "pskill" which is part of SysInternal's PSTools suite to stop any process, including explorer.exe

SysInternal's was recently acquired by Microsoft. Their site is here, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

The PSTools suite is here, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/PsTools.mspx

The command that you would use is,
pskill explorer.exe

To restart explorer.exe you would hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, choose "Task Manager", and from the "File" menu, choose "New Task (Run)" and enter "explorer" and hit "ok".
