Wouldn't most people try to rescue a friend in danger? Why does he keep getting elected?
Anyone in MA got an answer?

There are any number of reasons that it would have been difficult. Kennedy's being drunk was not the best situation for Mary Jo Kopechne. What do you want people to say, that he let her drown deliberately? Get your rocks off somewhere else.
He keeps getting elected because he's a Kennedy - that HAS to be said, surely - but also because he happens to be a f**king good senator with a lot of f**king good ideas who does a whole f**king lot for his constituents on an individual basis. When people in MA contact Kennedy with particular problems, they get a response and action. He doesn't phone in his service to the state.

It's possible he made a sexual pass at her, and she kicked him out of the car, then drove accidentally into the water on a foggy night. Kennedy was drunk, and could not have rescued her anyway in the dark. This theory was first adanced by Mark Furman, and it explains a lot, including Kennedy's dry clothes.

I think it was 2 things, fear of death and lack of regard for anything or anyone but himself. I don't think there was any great secret or mystery involved.
He is and was a very selfish person that has been pampered his whole life.
I have no idea how he has been able to hold the office for so long except that it may be some of the voters way of hanging on to what could have been but never was, JFK and RFK.

Ted Kennedy is the lowest of the low. He killed that girl for what ever reason, pregnant, new to much, what ever. Money will buy you anything, even a Senate seat. The people of MA. can not be much better, if they keep electing him.

From what I remember he claimed he tried to dive down and save her. He got shot down by experts who said professional divers couldn't have gotten her out in that body of water, also suggesting he didn't really try or he probably would have died himself.
As far as MA goes, I'll be interested in the answers you get from anyone in that state.

I don't have any idea of why... maybe he did try to save her, maybe he didn't... maybe he only cared about his career and maybe he is incredibly remorseful... maybe he is all of these things.
Personally, I am not interested in this story. It happened a long time ago... I am not interested in George W's time in the National Guard, I am not interested in the strange details surrounding Foster's death, I am not interested in any skeletons of any politicians' skeletons until they are charged with a crime.
All of this is history and happened 40 years ago. I doubt you really care about this woman in this drowning... you just want to exploit the situation to attack a person. That's your right but I have that right to think that you are using this to grind an axe.

Because he didn't want to. He was more concerned about saving his career. I remember this. Next day with his neck brace on. My parents were old school dems too and they thought he was a dirtbag (which he is of course).

Saving someone even during wartime isn't always the "Right" thing to do.
Somewhere along the line he took a "Left" turn and ditched the poor dear.

Because he was drunk and panicked. And he's a lifetime blowhole politician...
they all need to get booted.
