They did not come up through the cozy confines of the USTA junior ranks, weren't club players - they learned the game on courts in the 'hood and were power players in a point in time when finesse was again being stressed in the women's pro game.
There was a lot of criticisim directed towards their father, but the sport has its share of eccentric fathers/mothers who tarnish the achievements of their children.
The ladies have grown up and matured under the lights of pop culture and they can easily lay claim to be in the Top Ten women's players of all-time and one of the best doubles teams ever.

Most likely because they are extremely arrogant and are the sorest losers in the game. If they are winning they are full of smiles and giggles, but in defeat it's another story altogether. There is always a "reason" for the defeat. Tiredness, fatigue, illness, etc. Between them, they have yet to give an opponent who's beaten them even the smallest amount of praise. Even if a player feels they lost because they were off form, the opponent still has to do something to beat them. The match isn't won by default. Obviously it must be tough for any top-level player to accept defeat, but surely a little humility and some praise for the victor wouldn't kill them. Every time Federer loses, it is a shock but he still manages to show some class in defeat. The Williamses could do with taking a leaf out of his book. Besides, with the losses coming more and more frequently for them these days, the sour, catty comments look even more stupid. As for the ridiculous notion that it is because of their color? That is a complete cop out. Arthur Ashe and James Blake have always been highly respected and well liked. The difference is that they are infinitely classier individuals, equally gracious in victory AND defeat.

I think it has to do with all of the above metioned 1) race 2)jealousy because they're naturally talented and can beat anyone in the game 3) their arrogance
But come on if it was all about arrogance and/or personality than people would hate Justine Henin too, because lets face it, she's not the most likeable player, but the media adores her. Same goes for Hewitt.

Because they are "ghetto", and tennis is the least ghetto sport. I'm not saying black, I'm saying ghetto. White people love Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, etc. The Williams sisters aren't very classy, and their father also rubs people the wrong way. Tennis has probably a 99% white fan base that doesn't like this behavior. It is the same reason white people don't like Allen Iverson, or Mike Vick (even before the dogfighting). If they were white, they still wouldn't be liked, but I think being black they are under more of a microscope. Its unfortunate, but that is the truth.

People sure throw the word "hate" around a lot on this site! You might not have much in common with a shy person, you might find it difficult to interact with a shy person, you might not have chemistry with a shy person.....but that certainly doesn't mean you have to "hate" them! You make it sound like all shy people are hated and that is totally and completely wrong! If you "hate" all shy people, then you need to ask yourself why you do because the problem lies with you and not the shy person!

They are generally disliked because they routinely display unpleasant arrogance, unsolicited rudeness, and a regular lack of grace and humility. They give back-handed compliments at best to their opponents, and are very cloistered from the rest of the tour. Their snobbery and aloofness put people off, and make it difficult to see past their veil of unclassiness to the truly talented individuals they are.

I agree with you. They both are probably the best female tennis players in the power level of game. Two of the best talents we can find. I am not sure if a lot of people really "hate" them. Probably people are just jealous of talents. I do like Venus, but Serena. I could not stand for her defeat speeches which always were related to her subtle illness or injury........Never credit to anybody. But, I totally respect they both are great tennis players, and enjoy much about their games.

To extend on rammsteinfan-1's answer:
What professional athlete says this after a loss 'I sat back and let her attack me, and now I feel violated. All she had to do was show up'[Serena on her QF loss to Henin]. Comments like that are reasons why people hate the Williams sisters.

People are jelous of natural talent. It's obvious they inherited it since they are sisters. Most players have to really work for it. They were just born with it. Also some get mad because they could both be better if they worked at it harder.

a pair of phonies that came along to make a quick buck but their ignorance and lack of personality, class and dignity got in the way from being liked or admired and will be quickly forgotten when they finally leave the sport//// and the sport will be better off without them///
