I live in Hendersonville, TN which is about 30 miles from downtown Nashville. It's a fabulous mid-size town- about 50,000 people now and has tons of amenities- loads of shopping, restaurants, good schools, parks, historic sites, great people. If you want to stay IN Davidson county, which IS Nashville, try the Bellevue area in the west part of the county. Also, several areas near downtown are up and coming cool places. But, I'd rather live outside the city and commute- something I've done for over 6 years now. The commute isn't nearly as bad as you may hear. Native Nashvillians have never dealt with SF bay area traffic, LA traffic, oreven Las Vegas traffic- this is a piece of cake! Hope you enjoy wherever you choose to live!

Try Murfreesboro. I used to live there for a few years. Middle Tennessee State University is there and it's a pretty laid back scene. It gets a little pricey near the school if you are renting, but other than that it's really nice. Funny, down-to-earth people for the most part. It's Rutherford county, though, not Davidson. About 35-45 minutes to downtown Nashville. Smyrna is closer but there's not a whole lot to do there and it's not as nice. If you want to go north of Nashville, I've heard Goodlettsville is a very good place to live but a lot of famous people live there so it may be more expensive.
